Playing in the biennial R&A Junior Open fifteen year old Oman National Team player Adam Al Barwani produced a fine performance to win the Eastern European and Middle East Trophy.
Played every two years at a venue close to that of The Open the junior championship is open to the best under 16 golfers from each of The R&A’s affiliates. The 2024 event was played at Kilmarnock (Barassie) on the outskirts of Troon and was contested by 120 players from 70 countries.
Despite facing the same challenging weather conditions that the competitors at the 152nd Open experienced, Adam recorded two consistent opening rounds of net 74 to top the Eastern European and Middle East group and win the shield, becoming the first player from Oman to achieve the honour.
Adam’s first two rounds of gross 80 also saw him make the cut and progress to the third and final round where he posted his best score of the week, a gross 79, to finish the main event in tied 33rd position.
Speaking about his experience Adam is quoted as saying “I am very proud to have won the Eastern European and Middle East Trophy. I trained a lot in Oman before leaving for the tournament and then spent three days at the Rick Valentine Academy in Scotland immediately before the event which helped me to prepare for the Scottish weather and adapt to the playing conditions. During the event the conditions were tough, it was very windy, rainy and cold, very different to Oman! Being the first Omani to win this trophy is an amazing accomplishment both for me and my country, I will continue to work hard and hope to win more international trophies in the future. I would like to thank my parents, the Oman Golf Association, and the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Youth for their ongoing support, and also The R&A for giving me the opportunity to participate in such a prestigious tournament.”
Vice Chairman of the Oman Golf Association, Faiz Mohammed Riaz, added “We congratulate Adam on his fine performance, making the cut in such a high-profile event is a fantastic achievement and to finish at the top of his regional group is something that Adam should be very proud of. We commend Adam’s commitment and work ethic and look forward to more success in the future.”
